What Is Water-Based Resin?
The water-based resin lining used in Green Lab’s products are made using a water-based dispersion system. This creates a water-proof barrier that protects the coated paper product from being damaged by water. This lining is called “water-based” as it suspends polymer particles in water, rather than in a solvent.
This makes it an eco-friendly alternative to traditional resins that use solvents. Water-based resin is an incredibly versatile material that can provide several properties such as adhesion, durability and flexibility.
The Recycling Process: Water-Based Resin vs PE-Coating
Traditional PE-coated paper has a layer of PE film attached to the paper fibres, this means that plastic is embedded in the paper fibres, making it unsuitable for recycling as a significant amount of PE cannot be recovered during the pulping stage.
Water-based resin coated paper on the other hand, breaks down into small pieces during the disintegration process and dispersion particles on the paper can be retained with fibres and hence will not disrupt the papermaking process making it much more suitable for recycling.
Why Choose Water-Based Resin Products?
Go plastic-free
One of the biggest reasons you should consider adopting water-based resin products is the environmental benefits they offer. As opposed to the unrecyclable PE coated paper used in most disposable coffee cups and takeaway items today, Green Lab coats our food-grade paper packaging products in a water-based resin.
This makes our water-based resin lined packaging products 100% recyclable, biodegradable and compostable. Our water-based resin products are also home compostable, meaning that they fully decompose in soil and do not require special equipment or specific environmental conditions to break down.
Furthermore, they are also incineration safe and do not emit any toxic fumes when incinerated.
Safe for food
Water-based resin coated products are not only environmentally friendly, they are also 100% food safe and microwave friendly as they do not contain any harmful chemicals or toxins.
Water-based resin coated products offer excellent barrier properties which help protect food from moisture and prevent liquids from seeping out so you won’t have to worry about coffee cup spills ever again.
Gain a competitive advantage
With growing consumer awareness of environmental issues, it is becoming increasingly important for businesses to consider sustainable practices. Adopting sustainable practices such as incorporating water-based resin lining instead of traditional PE-coated lining for your F&B consumables can signal to consumers a business’ commitment and dedication to paving the way for a greener future.
This can improve a business’ brand image and brand alignment as well as help differentiate them from competitors.
